“Shell Song” by Gigi Marie was originally written on the piano and performed at a school cabaret by a super young Gigi Marie. She recounts, “I was aesthetically entranced by art music legends like Bjork and Klaus Nomi, so I tried my best. I performed wearing a vintage gold lame ballgown and floor-length brown leather duster. I remember really flipping the duster out dramatically behind me as I took my place on the piano bench — treating it like a glam rock vampire cape sort of thing. It was a pretty radical outfit, and I might have to wear that out at some point again.”

Teaching herself guitar over the past few years has made her switch from piano man to guitar gal. In early 2022, with electric guitar in hand, she wondered if “Shell” could be given new life via a Squire Mustang, a bit of reverb, and a tad more life perspective. Gigi recalls, “The lyrics switched up in ways that felt prescient, the rhythm felt more urgent, and all of this is because of the vehicle I used to develop this new version of my song: me and my guitar. Maybe I’ll record the piano version one day, but right now, this feels like my song in this moment.”
